Painting practice.
Needed to practice painting with an actual setting, so I used a sketch from my last commission.
It's a scene from chapter XVI of *Prancypants's fic Flight of the Alicorn.

No, the stallion next to Rarity is not Big Macintosh, he just has a very similar colour scheme in this lighting.

I'm sure there are problems with the lighting and reflections and whatnot, but it was good practice. and I'm quite happy with how it turned out, even if I had to paint Buckaroo twice because the power cut out and I had forgotten to save...

However, if you have any comments or critiques, they are more than welcome.

This is a beautiful piece and it looks amazingly three dimensional. The use of colors in lighting gives an incredible feeling of mood and reinforces the setting you've chosen. You've done a good job of composing the piece with asymmetrical negative space around the ponies and the lines of both ponies' bodies encourage the viewer's eyes to converge on the same point towards the top of the piece (where the light source is). I especially liked the reinforcement of her raised front leg with the upwards angle.

I have a few small suggestions and I want to emphasize that these are very minor details in an already excellent drawing. Around the left side of the male pony (especially along his shoulder and lower leg) I'd recommend doing some subtle blue highlighting to distinguish him from the background. That section of the picture is meant to be dark, but it strains my eyes a little as they keep trying to pick that line out of the darkness. You did a good job of this kind of highlighting on the back of her tail, so it's clear you already know this technique.

The whites of her eyes are coming up as a little too pink to me. Most of the rest of the color in the image is a beautiful blue palette that does an awesome job of conveying the setting the ponies are in. For some reason her eyes have become rather pink to me when I expected them to be more of a base blue like the rest of her face. I'd consider shifting them a bit more into the blue palette. I agree with your decision to make them whiter than the surrounding face to make them pop, I just think it went a little too far. ;)

I want to reiterate how incredibly impressed I am with this piece. You have an amazing eye for composition and lighting that you've clearly developed through a lot of hard work. I'll look forward to seeing what you draw in the future. :D

This is a beautifully crafted picture with intricate detail and perfect posture and pose. The way you drew this is very conceptual and mindblowing. The water you drew looks classy and realistic, and the air bubble forming underneath give the image a very realistic quality.

Rarity's body is very realistic and amazing, you captured the image of her bruised and wounded and in determination very clearly.

The expressions are very real, and the eyes an hair are simply spectacular. The light shimmering in through the street vent had a very fine and sparkly essence. You did an incredible job on this and I long for more stylish works such as this to come. The picture is defined as memorable and serious, and you did that awesomely. I give a big hand to you for this, because I feel this is possibly one of the finest works I'v seen. Because of this, you ave provoked me into inviting you happily to two of my MLP groups, as an admin.

I hope you say yes, which would stun me if you did so, but either way, I love this masterpiece. Good job.

She looks like she's been fighting!

Not by this point, she's mostly just been roughed up by the jungle.

Excellent use of lighting. You have successfully eliminated characters or places which are not so as important as this center character however you've still made all the details around her really relevant and seeable..

I think the water you did in this piece and how we see-through it, the colours, the vibrancy, the bounce reflection, sparkle, is really wonderful. It seems this moment is very revealing and mystic, as well as a peril-filled adventure which is near to it's end! Her face just seems so stern and waiting to meet her destiny! You can tell by the small scars/scratches on her..

This is a fabulous piece. The storytelling is really wonderful!

ohh nice rendering! think you could summarize what's happening right there? :)

Rarity and the mercenaries Buckaroo, Zinzi the Zebra and her half Zebra son (who both couldn't fit into the picture) are escaping via aqueduct from a Griffon base in a dense jungle. Rarity was supposed to be assassinated during an airship race and the mercenaries were betrayed by one of their own. On their way they hear through an air cooling duct, the Griffon general Karroc and the retired Guard pegasus Tempest, arguing about their plans/alliance and getting into a fight (here [link]). This allows Rarity to discover their plan to cause a war between the two races and upset the balance of power over Equestria. Directly after this scene they caused a steam tugboat to explode to make their getaway.
It's from *Prancypants fic The Flight of the Alicorn. I recommend it, if you're into fics and don't mind some well written Rarity/Blueblood shipping. Also, treachery, conspiracy, airship races and struggling to survive in harsh and dangerous situations.
